What’s Your Beef? Hopefully Southern. Some of the tastiest, tenderest, most succulent, sweet smelling steaks in the country can be found in Winton, just ask John and Lindsy Dobson. A Dobson-reared shorthorn friesian steer was hailed the tastiest crossbred steak in New Zealand this week at the Meat and Wool New Zealand Steak of Origin challenge. The Dobsons said yesterday they were pretty chuffed with the honour, as they debuted in the competition this year. “We’ve always said our meat was as good as any we’ve ever tasted”, Mrs Dobson said. The diary farmers own a 600 cow operation and usually only give up one bull for the staff and keep one in their freezer. Thankfully, the Dobsons are now looking at getting into beef breeding. Meanwhile, Mount Linton Station was third in the best of British breed with its Angus steak entry. Senior stockwomen Claire Scott said four entries from the station made it into the semi-final stage as well so the team were “pretty happy” with the result. The judging panel comprised rugby league legend Graham Lowe, Greg Heffernan (New Zealand Beef and Lamb advisory chef) and Sunday Star-Times columnist Steve Braunias. The competition attracted a record 200 entries from beef farmers, retailers, wholesalers and food services nationwide. An Angus Pure sirloin steak from Neat Meat Company in Auckland was judged the countries tastiest and most tender steak, chosen from 16 finalists at the Beef Expo in Palmerston North
